Resting in Inactivity VS. Resting in the Finished Works of Jesus

There is a kind of rest that feels peaceful on the outside, but on the inside, it is empty. You may call it rest, but in reality, it is inactivity… and that inactivity begins to give birth to avoidance, passivity, and procrastination. Inactivity slowly erodes your confidence, giving rise to insecurity, intimidation, and immaturity.

It often shows up in subtle ways.

When you remain in inactivity, you stop developing and growing and slowly begin reverting to old habits. You lower your standards and stop holding yourself to a higher level of expectation. You begin to prefer comfort over accountability. You become easily offended, because growth is no longer stretching you. Responsibility feels heavy instead of purposeful. And eventually, a quiet sense of hopelessness and lack of purpose begins to settle in your heart. Nothing is growing in that space, and nothing is being transformed. This is not resting in the finish works of Jesus, rather resting in inactivity.

True rest is found in the finished work of Jesus Christ. When Jesus said, “It is finished” (John 19:30), He was not inviting you into a life of passivity, but into a life of confidence. Christ established everything necessary for your acceptance, identity, and wholeness. When you begin to rest in that truth, you are no longer working for acceptance, but from acceptance. You are no longer striving to be enough because you have already been made whole through Him… you are His workmanship, created for good works, He prepared beforehand (Ephesians 2:8–10). Fear no longer has a hold on you, because you understand that the outcome will never depend on your capabilities. True rest in Christ comes through purposeful action, daily reflection, and focused intention.

Take steps to align your life with purpose, guarding your mind from distractions, and sharing your journey with trusted companions. Rest thrives when it is active, intentional, and supported. When you rest in the finished works of Jesus, it produces momentum, discipline, and clarity in your life. It calls you to grow, to take responsibility, and to move forward not out of pressure or fear, but out of purpose. As you walk forward in that rest, you can trust that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion (Philippians 1:6).
